About the USS Battle Born

USS Battle Born

In the spring of 1996, a group of friends from Carson City, Nevada attended a Star Trek convention, put on by Creative in Reno, NV. Among the various wonders encountered there were Star Trek Fan clubs that met in person, and an old friend (former teacher) from Middle School. Armed with the knowledge that Star Trek fan clubs could be a thing, but none existed in Carson City, they teamed with that former teacher.

On July 6, 1996 the USS Battle Born, NCC-9607 (see the date in there...) declared itself operational as an independent Star Trek Fan club for Carson City Nevada. Initial discussions were had with STARFLEET International (SFI), Region 4, but no real traction could be made in that direction. The ship enjoyed movie outings, laser tag, and other fun. They made quick friends with the USS Highroller (SFI’s Reno, NV chapter) and their counterpart Klingon persona’s.

USS Battle Born crew participated and assisted with Sci-Fi Summit 1996 in Reno, NV - put on by several Highroller members. All who participated got to enjoy dinner with Robert O'Reilly for their efforts!

By 1997, the Battle Born became affiliated with Maquis Forces International (MFI), and continued to be associated with MFI for a few years - using the “MBS USS Battle Born” name.

In 2003 the crew decided to accept joining SFI again. Successfully launched, but never commissioned, it remained on the books in various fashion for a few years in SFI, while reverting mostly to a local, independent group.

With the pending 2009 Star Trek movie coming out, former crew of the USS Battle Born discussed getting back together. This effort was conducted primarily online, vs in person. They began by joining SFI and forming the 301st Marine Expeditionary Unit. The unit grew, with both old and new members joining, and soon became clear they needed to launch a chapter. Thus the latest iteration of the USS Battle Born was re-born.

Launching on 19 July 2010 and completing her shakedown cruise 9 months later on 19 April 2011 - the USS Battle Born thrived in Region 3, taking home Chapter of the year for 2011. It’s members have regularly won regional and fleet level awards each year and has become a reliable source for various staff officers around the fleet.

Commanding Officers:

  • Glenda Block - 1996-2004
  • TJ Spotts - 2004-2006
  • Jeremy Carsten - 2010-2016
  • James Trainham - 2016-2020
  • Alice Nightbird - 2020- 2022
  • Arjay Moody - 2022 - 2023
  • Michael McCoslin - 2023 - Present
  • 2363 - Early Nebula Class ships are in production. Somewhat cheaper than a Galaxy class to produce, and with given mission pods, a more flexible platform for various extended, or specific assignments.
  • 2366 - Wolf 359. In response to this loss, Starfleet begins researching several new ship types. Section 31 does likewise, in secret.
  • 2369 - USS Battle Born, NX-9607 - a clandestine prototype, Quasar class was developed and began shake down operations. The Quasar class was entirely too resource intensive to build other ships of the class, but it’s technologies did feed other projects, like the upcoming Intrepid class design, as well as the later Sovereign class ships.
    • 2370 - Maquis form in response to the treaty with the Cardassian Union, and subsequent abuse by the Cardassians.
    • 2371 - USS Battle Born is stolen, by its lead designer, LTCMDR. Rosabs Tsernac and delivered to the Maquis. Now MFS Battle Born. She is later equipped with a Klingon cloaking device, when the Klingons invaded Cardassia and befriended the Maquis.
    • 2373 - Maquis are all but wiped out by the combined Dominion and Cardassian forces. No records exist of the MFS Battle Born’s fate, though Dominion forces did take much greater losses at Veloz Prime than 'mere freedom fighters' should be able to account for.
  • 2370 - A Nebula Class cruiser is commissioned as the USS Battle Born, NCC-69607, into Starfleet. This was not a classified project, like it’s previous namesake, but regular ship of the line. The ship, along with the embarked 11th MSG, were taken off the intended exploration mission, and thrust into the conflicts leading up to, and during the wars with the Klingon and Dominion as part of 4th Fleet. Captain Glenda Block commanded.
  • 2375 - USS Battle Born is lost in the attack on the Chin'toka system, when the Breen introduced energy dissipation weapons during that battle.
  • 2375 - 301st MEU Datawarfare assets were assigned to infiltrate the Kelvas Repair Facility network, in an effort to gain more information on this weapon. While unable to gain technical data on the weapon this way, they were able to map the facility for the team that eventually went in physically, as well as provide cover for their departure.
  • 2375 - Dominion War ends.
  • 2376 - 301st MEU Aerospace assets were patrolling the Chin'toka system, and came across the wreckage of the USS Battle Born. With so many ships lost during the Dominion war, it was hauled back to Starbase 3 for refit and repair.
  • 2377 - Rebuilt and updated as much as was feasible, the USS Battle Born launched on an initial 5 year mission under Colonel Jeremy Carsten. The 301st, now MSG, is assigned. Served in various missions with 3rd Fleet and in support of SFMC 3rd Brigade.
  • 2380 - Lower Decks (Cartoon)
  • 2382 - Colonel James Trainham takes over USS Battle Born. BRD Efferus Bellator is OIC of the 301st, and operating as 3BDE DOIC-Foreward.
  • 2385 - (April 5 - First Contact Day) Mars is attacked by synthetic workers. This halts the rescue attempt of the Romulan's from an impending supernova by the Federation/Starfleet.
  • 2387 - COL Trainham's 5 year tour complete. Delivers USS Battle Born to Starbase 3 for another major refit (She's been on extended recon and patrol duties for ten years). She is explicitly forbidden from assisting in the evacuation of Romulus/Remus.
  • 2387 - Romulan Supernova.
  • 2388 - Refit complete. Includes new warp core and nacelles to meet current requirements and standards. Weapons upgraded to similar units used on Sovereign and newer classes.
  • 2389 - 2394 - Sent on 5 year tour past the Cardassian Union exploring/mapping.
  • 2394 - 2398 - Escort duty around the Federation.
  • 2398/9 - Minor refit. 29 year old ship sent back out. 301st still embarked - an 'old school' continued pairing of marine unit to a ship.
  • 2399 - Colonel Alice Nightbird assigned as Captain. Shakedown from new refit/new 301st equip.
  • 2402 - Captain Arjay Moody Assigned as Captain. Continue patrol and serving as 3rd fleet flag ship.
  • 2403 - Colonel Michael McCoslin Assigned as Captain. Continue patrol. 3rd Fleet flag moved from USS Battle Born to USS Masamune after 8 years.
  • 2404 - "Now"

The USS Battle Born started out as a standard configuration Nebula Class Cruiser (2370). However, having sustained critical damage, and thought completely destroyed during the battle of the Chin'toka system (2375) in the Dominion War, it was removed from the active service list. Later, the hull was found adrift by the 301st MEU, and returned to Starfleet. Having lost so much during the Dominion war, the USS Battle Born was taken in and refit with as much modern technology as they could quickly cram into her. Improved phasers, torpedo launchers, shields, computer cores, and warp reactor were all included in the refit. Since that time, the USS Battle Born has undergone subsequent refits, to keep her as a viable ship of the line through 2400 and beyond.
